New Program “Forum Law as Culture”
Through its homonymous forum, the Käte Hamburger Center for Advanced Study in the Humanities “Law as Culture” offers a space for interdisciplinary and intercultural exchange with international guests and fellows at the Center. The forum events take place on Tuesdays in the Center's Max Weber Lecture Room and are open to the interested public. Admission is free.

Workshop "Law and Emotion"
The Käte Hamburger Center for Advanced Study in the Humanities “Law as Culture” organizes a workshop entitled "Law and Emotion - Some Reflections on Passion and Dispassion of Law Across Legal Cultures" on 21 and 22 November 2019.

Lecture by Werner Gephart at the Académie Royale de Belgique
On Tuesday, October 8, 2019, Prof. Dr. jur. Dr. h.c. Werner Gephart, founding director of the Käte Hamburger Center "Law as Culture", will give a lecture on "Hybridation et décloisonnement des sphères: un espace de création en lien avec les musées de Bonn au sein d'un centre de recherches universitaire". The Lecture is part of the colloquium "Faut-il vider les bibliothèques et les musées?" at the Académie Royale de Belgique in Brussels.

New Publication by former Fellow Elizabeth Suzanne Kassab
"Enlightement on the Eve of Revolution - The Egyptian and Syrian Debates", by Dr. Elizabeth Suzanne Kassab, has just been published. Dr. Kassab was Fellow at the Käte Hamburger Center "Law as Culture" from October 2013 to September 2014.The publication was particularly influenced by her research stay at the Center. This applies to intellectual conversations as well as the location, the genius loci:
“The center’s founding director, Werner Gephart, with his accomplished scholarly and artistic gifts, offered a welcoming setting in an atmosphere of convivality, freedom, and intellectual erudition. […] And last but not least, the center’s physical location on the majestic Rhine was a constant invitation for peaceful mediation and productive conversations, a most precious opportunity for those of us who hailed from the convulsive parts of the Arab World” (Elizabeth Suzanne Kassab, Enlightement on the Eve of Revolution – The Egyptian and Syrian Debates, Acknowledgments, [viii]).

Fellowship posting for the research period from April 1, 2020, to March 31, 2022
The Käte Hamburger Center for Advanced Study “Law as Culture” invites academics of excellent standing to apply for a fellowship or junior fellowship for a maximum of 12 months on the subject: "Law and Community". The final date for applications is August 31th, 2019.

Masahiro Noguchi received Philipp Franz von Siebold Award
© Bundesregierung / Guido Bergmann© Bundesregierung / Guido BergmannOn June 27, Prof. Dr. Masahiro Noguchi was awarded the Philipp Franz von Siebold Prize by the President of the Federal Republic of Germany Frank-Walter Steinmeier. Masahiro Noguchi is former Fellow at the Käte Hamburger Center "Law as Culture" and completed his doctoral studies under the supervision of Professor Dr. Dr. h.c. Werner Gephart, with a thesis on “Kampf und Kultur: Max Webers Theorie der Politik aus Sicht seiner Kultursoziologie” in 2003. In his speech, the president honoured Noguchi's outstanding scientific work, and and paid tribute to Mr. Noguchi as a bridge-builder between the cultures and sciences of Japan and Germany.

Review of the 22th Volume of the Käte Hamburger Center for Advanced Study’s Publication Series Law as Culture (edited by Werner Gephart)
A review of the publication „Umkämpftes Recht. Zur mehrdimensionalen Analyse rechtskultureller Konflikte durch die politische Kulturforschung“ by PD. Dr. Jan Christoph Suntrup, former research coordinator and fellow and current affiliate researcher at the Käte Hamburger Center „Law as Culture“, has been published by Prof. Dr. Stephan Rixen in the March 2019 Edition (Issue 5) of the journal JZ (Juristen Zeitung). Prof. Dr. Stephan Rixen is professor of law at the University of Bayreuth. The reviewer highlights the work as an impressive and convincing example of interdisciplinary legal research. Additionally, he argues for using the publication as a fundamental work of legal studies, and, furthermore, to honour it as "legal book of the year“.

On Thursday, 07 March 2019 (11.00 - 11:45) Theresa Strombach and founding director Prof. Dr. jur. Dr. h.c. Werner Gephart, will speak at the workshop "Legal communication in a multilingual and multicultural context" on the topic: "Legal Communication in the Light of the Law-as-Culture Paradigm". The workshop will be conducted by the Center for Interdisciplinary Language Research (ZefiS), Bergische Universität Wuppertal.

Invitiation to the Workshop - Provenance and provenance research in Germany and the France
Provenance research and the protection of cultural assets have awoken from a deep slumber. New professorships are being established, as in Bonn; institutes specializing in restitution and compensation are being created; and, if one’s feelings can be trusted, a kind of revolution is currently underway, a “tectonic quake” as described by Bénedicte Savoy, who was appointed by President Macron to serve on a commission addressing such issues. At the same time, both an aesthetic reflection and an invitation to return stolen goods occurs in Maria Eichhorn’s fascinating Rose Valland-Projekt, which was at the center of attention at the last documenta and is now being advanced with the artist at the Käte Hamburger Center for Advanced Study “Law as Culture”. The workshop, a joint effort by the Commission pour l’indemnisation des Victimes de Spoliations (CIVS), the Institut français, and the Käte Hamburger Center for Advanced Study “Law as Culture”, aims to bring together the experiences of historians, sociologists, and practitioners of provenance research in such a way that the globality of this large task can be taken into account in Germany and France while likewise considering each country’s national context.
